When it comes to selecting the best baby clothes, the options might seem endless—and confusing. Will your baby gravitate toward gender neutral basics, bold prints or more classic styles...or should we say, will you? There are even more questions that come to mind after your baby arrives. What is the best fabric for babies? Which sleeper is best for chilly nights? Will any of the socks ever stay on?

While there are a plethora of brands to shop from when it comes to baby fashion, finding the best baby clothes takes some careful consideration. For instance, are those organic onesies really worth it, or should you spring for that sweet winter coat instead? These are questions we all ask ourselves as parents, but especially in the first go-around as you’re building your registry.

As a mom and avid shopping writer, I’m here to point you in the right direction of the best baby clothes, so you can focus on more important things: like your new babe. I’ve also personally tried these brands with my own child or received firsthand recommendations from other parents. I also spoke with several experts to determine the best fabrics to shop for and how to dress our littles without overheating them. You can read through those notes in our buying guide below.

The best baby clothes brands in every category of infant dress.

Best Baby Clothes Overall

Hanna Andersson: Comfy, Elevated Pieces That Still Feel Kid-Friendly

Hanna Andersson Baby Cardigan In Organic Cotton

One of my favorite parts about Hanna Andersson pieces are that they’re fun and playful but still look and feel a bit more elevated. For instance, my son has long loved trucks. While many options in this arena are, well, kind of ugly, Hanna Andersson truck prints are so cute that I get as excited about dressing him in them as he does. Plus the fabric is supple and doesn’t fade with repeated washes. This baby clothing brand is loaded with basics, from sleepers to sweatshirts, but also plenty of luxe options like organic sweaters and sweet matching holiday pajamas.

Janie & Jack: Classic And Well-Made Pieces

Janie and Jack Boy Bronze Green Herringbone Herringbone Cardigan

With sizes for babies to 18-year-olds, Janie and Jack is a one-stop-shop for classic, well-made pieces. Most of the Janie and Jack pieces I purchased for my son withstood all of the messes that typically come with babies and will be passed down to any future siblings, which speaks to the quality.I love the attention to detail here.

Zara: Trendy With Great Basics

Zara Pouch Pocket Sweatshirt

As many of us know, Zara offers a wide array of styles at various price points and in a number of gender-neutral styles. I’m partial to the onesies and sweet, stylish tops, which are soft and great quality. Plus, I found the sizes offered a bit more wiggle room, so that my son was able to wear pieces for longer than with other brands.

Best Organic Baby Clothes

Honest Baby: Every Color Under The Sun

HonestBaby 10-Pack Organic Cotton Short-Sleeve Bodysuits

Especially in the beginning, you can never have too many baby onesies. These Honest Baby onesies are durable, soft, made from organic cotton and come in every color you could dream of. I also love that they come in sets so you can save a few minutes instead of hunting for onesies one by one.

Monica + Andy: Prints Galore At A Manageable Price

MOST POPULAR

Monica + Andy Kimono Tie One-Piece

No matter your child’s style, Monica + Andy has a print that will suit them. Does your baby really like your golden retriever? Monica + Andy has an adorable onesie to celebrate that. You name it, they probably have a soft-to-the-touch organic cotton outfit for you and your baby to enjoy. I personally love how easy their pieces are to put on and take off, as well (like this darling kimono one-piece).

Pehr: Sweet, Serene And Soft

Pehr Stripes Away Ruffle Organic Cotton Romper

Available in a wide-array of soft, serene colors and prints, Pehr’s range of infant clothing is always a great choice. The fabrics are incredibly soft and durable, and you’ll reach for pieces from this brand again and again. With little details like ruffles or kimono ties, Pehr feels apt for a special occasion or a day lounging around the house.

Best Baby Clothes For Socks And Underwear

Old Navy: Bargains And Basics You’ll Love

Old Navy Unisex Crew Socks 6-Pack for Baby

If you think adult socks get lost in the wash a lot, baby socks are about to give you a run for your money. With that in mind, definitely don’t spend a lot on them. These Old Navy ones are soft, breathable and a great deal. They also have enough stretch to keep them on (and attached) your baby’s foot, and I appreciate the sizing listed on the footpad to both alert you that you’ve got the right sizes matched up and to distinguish them from siblings’ socks.

Hanes: A Tried And True For A Reason

Hanes Toddler Boys' Briefs (6-Pack)

Once you baby becomes a toddler and is ready to explore the wild world of toilet training, reach for these underwear. They have additional padding for comfort and accidents. They’re also 100% cotton, tagless and breathable with a midrise fit for all-around comfort in their first pair of big kid underwear. The fun prints certainly don’t hurt.

Bombas: Soft As Can Be With Fun Prints

Gives Back

Bombas Baby Lightweight Sock (4-Pack)

Bombas socks are extremely soft and lightweight so baby’s feet will stay cozy but won’t get too warm. It also helps that for each pair of socks purchased, one is donated to a child in need. There’s no toe seam to irritate sensitive toes and the cotton blend keeps them comfy and cool.

Best Baby Clothes For Sleepers And Pajamas

Burt’s Bees: Great Price And Quality

Burt's Bees Baby Pajamas

There’s no shortage of prints and styles with Burt’s Bees pajamas. These are particularly fantastic, because the double zipper allows you to handle middle of the night (or daytime) diaper changes without having to remove all of baby’s clothing. These are made with organic cotton and the brand is climate pledge friendly.

Hanna Andersson: Soft, Functional Zip-Up Sleepers In Fun Prints

Editor’s Pick

Baby Zip Footed Sleeper In Organic Cotton

Hanna’s baby sleepers and kids’ pajamas have a bit of a cult following where passionate fans even resell them in secondhand groups or pass them on to siblings and cousins. There’s a reason for all the fuss. Made from durable but soft organic cotton in wildly cute prints, these pajamas are worth stocking up on in all ages. For babies, you can choose from among zip-up footies or footless one-pieces or two-piece sets that sometimes make diaper-changes a bit easier. The fit is generous, so you can get more wear out of each item.

Posh Peanut: Fun Prints And Soft, Stretchy Fabric Babies Love

Posh Peanut Baby Rompers And Pajamas

Made with a viscose from bamboo, the Posh Peanut pajamas feel baby soft (get it?) and stretch with your little one. This helps parents move more gracefully through growth spurts—because realizing your baby just grew out of all of their pajamas at once isn’t fun.

Best Baby Clothes for Onesies And Bodysuits

Carter’s: Multipacks In Cozy Cotton For Less Than $15

Long-Sleeve Bodysuits (4-Pack)

The Carter’s name is practically synonymous with baby clothes, particularly when it comes to affordable basics for everyday wear (read: the bodysuit). Many parents dress their kids in head-to-toe Carter’s baby clothing when they’re very young and the changes and blowouts are frequent, saving pricier options for special occasions. But Carter’s bodysuits, pants, onesies and sleepers aren’t just cheap, they’re also made with an eye toward what the exhausted parents of newborns really need: easy-on clothing with snaps and zippers, cozy, stretchy fabric that sits nicely against your babe’s skin but also doesn’t hold onto every stain... and maybe will even retain its structure and charm for baby No. 2.

Kyte Baby: Soft Fabric And Cool Colors

Woman-Owned

Kyte Baby Bodysuit

The thing about Kyte Baby is that the bamboo-viscose blend it uses in all of its clothing feels like a cloud. It’s lightweight but warm and breathable. Kyte Baby offers a wide-array of beautiful colors in their onesies, which feature shoulders that allow you to remove them by pulling down instead of having to pull them over your baby’s head. This comes in especially useful when blowouts happen. We also love their sleepers, sleeping bags and more beautifully made and cooling baby clothes.

Kissy Kissy: Luxe And Totally Worth The Splurge

Kissy Kissy Simple Stripes Footie

Kissy Kissy sleepers are some of the softest available, made with pima Peruvian cotton. Available in blue or pink stripes, Kissy Kissy offers all the basic baby bodysuits you’ll need (footies, onesies, kimonos and more) so you can create a capsule wardrobe of sorts. I can confirm the quality of the fabric is worth the price. These were among my favorite of my son’s baby outfits.

Best Baby Clothes For Outerwear

L.L. Bean: Baby Buntings And Snowsuits Rated For Snow

Infants’ Ultralight 650 Down Bunting

Outdoors, Maine-based retailer L.L. Bean sells a selection of its adult winter gear in children’s, toddler and baby sizes. We love its jackets, in particular, snowpants, mittens and of course, this adorable baby bunting that you can zip your little one right into on a snowy day. Fold-over cuffs keep little hands and feet warm, and the hood fits snuggly to keep wind out, while the water-resistant nylon shell and water-repellent down fill keep them dry and warm.

Patagonia: Your Go-To For Layering

Patagonia Down Sweater

This down-filled Patagonia baby coat got a great deal of use in our household. It’s outer nylon shell is water-repellent, and the pockets can even pull closed to keep their hands warm, providing the ideal amount of coverage in the fall with this smart layer. The layering component is key to making sure your baby is the perfect temperature year-round.

The North Face: Reversible Options That Will Last

Baby Reversible Mount Chimbo Full-Zip Hooded Jacket

With a weather-resistant exterior and teddy bear soft interior, this little hoodie can be reversed so it’s really the only coat your baby will need in the colder months, making it worth the price tag. The sizing is also rather generous, so, in the case of my son, we were able to use this coat for two winters.

Mango: Stylish And Cozy Coats

Mango Faux-Fur Quilted Coat

If you’re hoping for something a bit more stylish and a little less outdoors-y, Mango is the move for baby outerwear. They have great options for baby boys and girls and in colors and styles that look far more high-end than their actual price tag. These are also a good option for those in warmer climates who may not need that down-filled bunting.

Best Budget-Friendly Baby Clothes

Carter’s: Affordability And Comfort In Every Pick

Zip Sleep And Plays (2-Pack)

Carter’s is a great place to stock up on affordable baby clothes, from sleepers to bodysuits and pants. They’re functional with a number of sweet designs and often turn into the workhorses of your little one’s wardrobe. This two-pack of 100% cotton sleepers is also Standard 100 Oeko-Tex certified, meaning it’s been tested free of more than 400 possible substances.

Cat & Jack: Home To The Cutest Sets

Cat & Jack Clip Dobby Top & Bottom Set

Not only does Cat & Jack provide stylish options at an easy-to-stomach price, but the outfits tend to be of good quality with the right amount of stretch. Many of their pieces take sensory sensitivities into consideration, so the tags and fabrics aren’t itchy or uncomfortable for babies and kids. Stock up on their ready-made outfit combos to show-off at daycare.

H&M: Neutrals, Stylish Prints And Characters At A Great Price

H&M Knit Cotton Jumpsuit

Can you think of a cuter jumpsuit? I’ll wait. H&M offers adorable basics, knits and printed outfits for babies. I love H&M for everyday picks, as well as trendy outfits and fun characters. A number of items come in multi-packs making it more affordable for more families, too.

Gap: For Classic Babies

Gap Baby Brannan Stripe One-Piece

Gap is the place to go if you want classic pieces for your baby that deliver in terms of style and quality. They often look far more pricey than they actually are and it’s easy to stock up on everything from basics to more premium outfits, such as this sweater romper in nautical stripes. The vibe is very Ralph Lauren but with Zara prices and they pretty much always have sales going on.

What Baby Clothes Should You Register For?

Nicole Makowka, head of education at LOOM, a platform for women at all stages of motherhood, suggests that you keep it simple in regards to baby clothes on your registry. “Focus on basics, multiple sizes and neutrals,” she says. “It's tempting to just think about the newborn phase, but babies grow quickly, and it's so handy to have a few sizes up already in the closet. Think about how old baby will be when the weather changes and adjust the sizes on the registry to match.” So, if you have a spring baby, you’ll want their winter clothes to be sized for 6 to 9 months. With that in mind, you’ll want to add onesies, bodysuits with long and short sleeves, pants, tops, sweaters and outerwear to your list. Socks will also come in handy.

“With sustainability and community in mind, consider borrowing some gently loved clothes from friends and family when possible,” Makowka adds.

What Kind Of Onesies Are Best For Babies?

“Like so many decisions in parenting, these choices are all about personal preference and convenience,” says Makowka. Many parents find that onesies with a few snaps in the diaper area and flap closure shoulders are easier to remove (pull down instead of over the head) in the case of a blowout. These also make standard diaper changes easier. Makowka says pajamas “with double zippers in the front are a great option” because they “can make those sleepy nighttime diaper changes so much more convenient than trying to match snaps. That way, you can just unzip the bottom for a nighttime diaper change and the baby stays cozy and warm up top.”

How Do Baby Clothes Sizes Work?

Most baby clothes are sized by age. So if you have a newborn, they’ll most likely either wear newborn size or 0-3 months. Once they reach 3 months old they might move up to 3-6 months or even a 6-months size and so on. Of course, some babies will be larger or smaller than the age size, so it’s important to have a wide array of sizes available.
